Trail Maps,  Guides & Tools

This page contains a collection of links, maps, companion guides and such - used on my Ice Age Trail Hikes/Runs

The Interactive Map and Trail Alerts Dashboard @ the IAT Website are VERY useful

Google Sheets version of some of the collateral from IAT Hiker Resources Page - a little more handy than MS Excel for me.   Outdated, but I still use them.
Please make a copy ('add to my drive') if you'd like to use.

Ice Age Trail Companion Guides

The Companion Guides below are now VERY out of date.  I still prefer the format (county by county and compact)
but probably best to buy the official atlas and guidebook at this point.

IAT Companion Guides predate the published Atlas and Guidebooks.  The PDFs posted below are from 2011, but are very useful on the trail - nicer overview maps and more concise descriptions.  The guides align with IAT Chapters and typically cover a WI county (or two) and are much easier to carry on the trail than the guidebook.  I print the companion guide map full-size/landscape, then create a 2-sided booklet with remainder of PDF (pages 2 thru end).  The booklet is easier to carry in a running belt or pocket.   IAT Companion Guides ARE out of date and no longer available on official IAT site that I could see.  There are also PDF annotations and IAT corrections in the guides that are highlighted/easy to see on the computer screen, but difficult to distinguish when printed in black&white, so be careful.

I also use these booklets like score-cards as I work my way thru Wisconsin counties.  I note changes, observations and gotcha's as I hike the trails, then periodically update my IAT Thousand Miler Spreadsheet - My notes from using the Companion Guides below the maps on this page. You will probably still need to buy the current Atlas and Guide from the Ice Age Trail Alliance or the IAT Smartphone app if you want to hike a significant portion (not sure I agree w/ that!).

Companion Guide Notes

Work in Process:  Slowly working through the maps, originally East to West but now attempting to hike whenever I pass thru an areas.  I will also attempt to note any changes I notice during planning/hiking using my booklets - changes from 2011 Guides vs 2014 Guidebook/Atlas vs actual trail experiences

1 - Indianhead Chapter, Polk & Burnett CTYs - Completed

Couple of new segments added near St Croix Falls and one on far east side of Polk county since 2011 Companion Guide. Not hard to follow, but a few more miles.   2011 mileage was 54.7, 2014 listed it as 57.1

2 - Blue Hills & Superior Lobe Chapters, Barron & Washburn Counties - Completed

Mileage was a little higher in 2014 Atlas/Guidebook.  Companion guide seems to work fine.

3 - Chippewa Chapter, Chippewa County - Completed

Mileage is slightly off, no new segments ... yet!

4 - High Point Chapter, Taylor County - Completed

Have only hiked/backpacked Lake Eleven, Jerry Lake and part of Mondeaux - this is a BEAUTIFUL area.  Especially in the fall!  IAT has maps/itineary posted on Backpacking page - Download Chequamegon NF Backpacking Segment [PDF] [4MB]

5 - Northwoods Chapter, Lincoln County - Completed

Just a little bit left to hike in Lincoln CTY.  Companion guide worked fine for me, slightly updated mileage in 2014 guidebook

6 - Langlade Chapter, Langlade County - Completed

Some segment changes.  Old Railroad Segment is now Summit Moraine.   Total mileage pretty close

7 - Central Moraine Chapter, Marathon County - Completed

Companion guides worked fine. Mileage slightly updated in 2014 Guidebook.  Dells of Eau Claire is a pretty cool area, Ringle was a VERY nice segment

8 - Portage/Waupaca Chapter, Portage & Waupaca Counties - Completed

Companion guides worked fine. Mileage slightly updated in 2014 Guidebook.

9 - Marquette/Waushara Chapter, Marquette & Waushara Counties - Completed

Companion guides worked fine. Mileage slightly updated in 2014 Guidebook.

10 - Baraboo Hills/Heritage & Lodi Chapters, Columbia & Sauk Counties - Completed

Seemed to have lost a segment since 2011, follow 2014 Guidebook for Northern Columbia CTY around Portage.

2014 Guidebook interleaved IAT Western Bifurcation, compare/review. Bifurcation was separate section in 2011.

Gibraltar Rock Segment was not in the 2011 Companion Guide. I missed it on first pass

11 - Dane & Green Chapters, Dane & Green Counties - Completed

Companion Guide worked fine for me, but I know Dane County. Mileage slightly updated in 2014 Guidebook.  Check latest Atlas and Guide, especially for Dane county, a number of segments have been added since 2011/

12 - Rock & Walworth/Jefferson Chapters, Rock, Jefferson and Walworth Counties Counties - Completed

Companion Guides worked fine. Mileage slightly updated in 2014 Guidebook

13 - Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter, Waukesha County - Completed

Went a bit off trail on the Heartland Segment, poorly marked trails *and* a correction in companion guide that I missed.

Mileage slightly updated in 2014 Guidebook

14 - Washington/Ozakee Chapter, Washington County - Completed

15 - Lakeshore Chapter, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Kewaunee & Door Counties - Completed
